How to SurveyGrobalWarming

1. Outline of the survey ・ Target organisms

The "Biological Seasonal Survey" is to grasp the progress of the season, such as the flowering of cherry blossoms and the first cry of semis, by observing changes in familiar organisms (animals and plants).
By accumulating survey results not only once (one year) but over a long period of time, it is possible to know the effects of climate change on living organisms.
Also, regarding the organisms to be investigated, it is assumed that the organisms and phenomena in the table below will be observed in Japan.
 * Not limited to the organisms listed in the table, you may conduct the survey with creatures that are close to you in your area and that can see seasonal changes.

 * For the specific survey method of each organism, refer to the implementation procedure of "3" below.

2. Specific example ("Cherry blossom flowering" as an example)

① Select one cherry tree that will be continuously observed for a long period of time(= sample tree).
② Observe the flowering date and the full bloom date.
・ The day when 5 or 6 flowers bloom on the sample tree is defined as the flowering date.
・ The day when about 80% or more of the flowers are in bloom on the sample tree is defined as the full bloom date.

⇒ In this way, in the biological season survey, it is important to frequently observe the target species (animals and plants) and accurately grasp the timing of changes.
・ For plants, observe the same specimen tree every year.
・ For animals (birds and insects), try to observe the same species in the same area every year.

⇒ Please record and enter the survey results along with photos and location information using the app "iNaturalist". (Refer to "4" below for how to use the app)

3. Survey procedure (Click here to download)

The specific survey method is described in the "Survey procedure".
Please download from the link below.

4. Install the app "iNaturalist" on your smartphone!

The web application "iNaturalist" (free of charge) is used to report the findings.
Please install the app to your smartphone, tablet, etc. according to the following materials (Link to PDF file)

iOS version (to iPhone, iPad)
Android version
Reference: Image of using the app / viewing results

5. Materials for study sessions (ppt) (Click here to download)

Before and after the outdoor survey, we encourage the survey organizers to consider holding a "Study session" to explain the current state of climate change, its impact on the environment and organisms, and countermeasures.
We think it will promote the understanding of the survey participants.
Please download and use the materials used in the study session from the link below.

● Let's actually carry out the survey!

Let's actually go out to the field and look for seasonal changes in organisms!
And, by continuing to observe the changes of the same organisms in the same season every year, we can know the effects of climate change.
What kind of seasonal changes can be seen around you?
Please try to survey the organisms that are familiar to you!
