W Publication of the 2003 White Paper on the Environment of Northwest Pacific Region

1 Background

  NPEC has been promoting various projects in collaboration with related countries and districts in Northwest Pacific region in order to preserve the environment of the Sea of Japan and Yellow Sea and their surrounding areas.
Now we have published the White Paper on the Environment of Northwest Pacific Region as part of our activity in the hope of helping to design leading protection measures for the marine environment by objectively an comprehensively grasping the present status concerning the environmental protection of Northwest Pacific region.

2 Outline of the paper

  The paper has been published as a triennial publication under the supervision of Prof. Jiro Kondo, chairman of the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan ( former chairman of the Science Council of Japan), with Professor Hideaki Nakada of the Faculty of Fisheries as chairman of the editorial committee. .
The paper consists of the following three chapters.

ChapterT Sea of Japan
The characteristics of the Sea of Japan is stated from the viewpoint oceanography, including the topography, hydrography and geology, etc.

ChapterU Sea of Japan and People
It described how the Sea of Japan has been related with the peoplefs culture and life in Northwest Pacific region. Especially it touches upon exchanges conducted through the Sea of Japan and depict part of the life of people living in coastal areas, groping for how the sea is closely related with people.

Chapter V Environment of Northwest Pacific Region and its Protection
It puts together the numerical data and information concerning the marine environment and materials on the environmental administration of each country of Northwest Pacific region (Japan, China, Korea and Russia). It also refers to regional environmental cooperation among the region including Japan). ( It is very difficult to sufficiently depict the whole picture of Northwest Pacific region because of the discrepancy of the related countries in monitoring parameters and measuring method, the degree of public information )

3 Recommendation

 

We should make efforts to protect the marine environment as part of the protection of the global environment, in the direction of building a society allowing sustainable developing, so that mankind may be able to enjoy the benefits of an affluent marine environment as a result of its favorable preservation.
