2003 International Environmental Symposium in the Northeast Asia Region

 Purpose
The purpose of the symposium is to promote comprehensive cooperation among local governments in the Northeast Asia Region with regard to information exchange on environmental protection measures and environmental cooperation, with the participation of environmental officials of the region.

2003 Meeting of the Research and Study Commission on Application of Bio-assay for Marine Environmental Monitoring

Purpose of Meeting
The 2003 meeting of the Research and Study Commission was held with the aim of collating information and exchanging opinions on application examples and the recent trend of research and development on bio-assay for marine environmental monitoring.

@ Professor Tanabe introduced "The workshop on Monitoring Methods Suitable for Developing Countries on Persistent Organic Pollutants" which would be held at Tsukuba city in December.
A Associate Professor Oshima explained newly-developed protein combining organic tin and agents decomposing organic tin.
B Professor emeritus Kobayashi pointed out the possibility of zinc causing irregular generation of sea urchins.
C Professor Maruyama reported on the possibility of sewage treatment water affecting nori and other seaweeds.
D Professor Nakamura introduced the findings of the biological survey using mussels on environmental pollution in Toyama Bay.
E Professor Koyama made a report of the research on the effect of estrogen (environmental hormone) on brackish water cyprinodonts.
F Professor Kusui introduced his research on monitoring using mussels as biomarkers
A Proposal
It was proposed that the activity should be shifted from information exchange to research after the discussion on future course of Bioassay.
