Projects to Promote NOWPAP Activities

@NPEC was designated in 1999 as the Special Monitoring and Coastal Environmental Assessment Regional Activity Center (CEARAC) of the Northwest Pacific Action Plan ( NOWPAP) , one of the 4 RACs located in the Northwest Pacific Region.
@NPEC as CEARAC is responsible for the development of new monitoring techniques such as those by remote sensing and bioassay for the establishment of a collaborative regional monitoring program and coastal environmental assessment of the region.
@NPEC carries out the following NOWPAP related projects besides the activities as CEARAC itself to facilitate and contribute to NOWPAP activities.

‚P@Participation to Meetings Relevant to NOWPAP

NOWPAP has to be implemented in a collaborative and harmonized way by the participating countries in order to tackle the preservation of the environment of the region.
NPEC, therefore, participates in related meetings such as intergovernmental meetings, RAC's focal point meetings, expert meetings etc. to gather information, establish better mutual understanding and nurture partnerships.
NPEC also CEARAC's focal point meeting which has the role of a coordinator and an advisory council of CEARAC.

‚Q@Development of Special Monitoring Methods

The immediate tasks of CEARAC are "marine environmental monitoring with remote sensing" and "red tides/harmful algal bloom(HAB) ". CEARAC established 2 working groups, consisting in the experts from NOWPAP member countries, to deal with these 2 tasks.
NPEC, as CEARAC, is in charge of the development of monitoring methods for the marine environment using techniques relating to remote sensing by satellites and bio-assay.
NPEC also holds study meetings and workshops etc. with the participation of scientists, experts and researchers from the Northwest Pacific Region for helping to facilitate the activity of NOWPAP.

‚R@"Watch System of the Marine Environment in the Northwest Pacific Region"
NPEC collects and disseminates remote sensing data and information in closely collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment by utilizing the facilities (for receiving and processing satellite data) installed by the Ministry of the Environment at the Toyama Prefectural Environmental Science and Research Center in Toyama.
NPEC also conducts researches and experiments necessary for developing new monitoring techniques by remote sensing for the marine environment with the cooperation of scientific communities as well as governmental institutes.

‚S@Other Basic Researches to Promote NOWPAP Activities

Other basic researches are also conducted to promote NOWPAP activities.
