Projects to Promote Researches Relevant to Environmental Protection It is necessary to obtain the more precise and extensive scientific knowledge by grasping the actual status and doing researches on the mechanism of the ocean, to promote further the environmental protection measures for the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea and peripheral areas. NPEC, thus, carries out various researches and surveys in cooperation with research organizations in the Northwest Pacific Region. １ Survey on Buried Objects and Washed up Driftage on the Coasts along the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea NPEC has carried out since 1996 this survey which was initiated by Toyama Prefecture and whose implementation was entrusted to NPEC. This survey is conducted with the participation of local governments and non-governmental organizations (NGO) of the Northwest Pacific Region. It aims at grasping the actual status of buried objects and washed up driftage on the coasts along the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea and raising their awareness of the necessity of marine environmental preservation at the same time. ２ Survey on Migratory Birds in North East Asia NPEC, on behalf of Toyama Prefecture, conducts since 1998 this joint project between Toyama Prefecture and Primorsky Territory of Russia to clarify the flying routes between Russia and Japan of winter birds and migratory birds of smaller species. The survey centered on a band binding method is conducted in Primorky, Khabarovsk and Sakhalin with the cooperation of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. NPEC also carries out activities in this area for raising public awareness towards the preservation of wild birds. ３ Joint Research on Liaohe Water Quality with Liaoning Province in China NPEC, on behalf of Toyama Prefecture, conducts since 1998 this joint research between Toyama Prefecture and Liaoning Province to cooperate with Liaoning Province in working out water quality improvement measures for the Liaohe river to which the Chine Government attaches great importance. The aims of the survey are to grasp the present status of the pollution of the Liaohe river and to find out the properties of the water and factors of its pollution. 4 Other Researches and Surveys on Environmental Protection of the Sea of Japan etc. NPEC also carries out other fundamental researches and surveys which can contribute to the environmental protection of the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea, such as, research on pollution load through river inputs along the Sea of Japan, research on monitoring estuaries along the Sea of Japan, or feasibility study on the treatment of industrial waste in Shengyang. |
